la prep™ Offers Free Sustainable Coffee during Earth Week

MONTREAL, April 18, 2011 – On Thursday, April 21st, in the spirit of Earth Week, la prep™ is offering free sustainable coffee at all participating locations across Canada. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy a free cup of Rainforest Alliance certified coffee in a compostable cup. Sustainable coffee is about coffee and packaging that is friendly to the coffee growing community, friendly to the environment, and ultimately friendly to the future.

la prep has recently become one of the first national food service chains to adopt a new compostable cup program. Every year, millions of coffee cups end up in landfills because their plastic coated paperboard is not recyclable or compostable. la prep cups are made from paperboard which is coated with an Ingeo™ biopolymer (PLA) made from plants. Both the fiber and coating used to make the cup come from fully renewable materials and the PLA coating makes the cups compostable in municipal and commercial composting facilities.

"Our compostable cups are slightly more expensive than traditional paper cups, however we are very aware of the impact of our coffee business towards the environment, and we want to do our part in building a sustainable future," said John Essaris, president at la prep. "We encourage the coffee industry to consider the impact that their millions of cups are having on our landfills every year. At the same time, we highly recommend the support of our municipalities by getting involved in the implementation of compost collection services throughout Canada."
